Flos, or “flower” in Latin, is a lighting brand that focuses on how lighting expresses and explores emotions. It’s the home to many lights known by just one name: the Snoopy, the Bellhop, the Glo-Balland a brand that celebrates craftsmanship and design, in the past, present and future. 

With all the autumnal weather happening at the moment, we were inspired by Chris and Roberta Hanley’s Joshua Tree monolith, The Invisible House, created in partnership with architect Tomas Osinkski. The pair produced cult movies like American Psycho and the Virgin Suicides and together have created a series of houses. 

This interview explores their experience of life, light and life in the desert and features some of our favourite Flos lighting in their incredible setting.

We were really interested in this because lighting and film have a symbiotic relationship. Lighting helps tell the story, set the scene, create a sense of drama, suspense and romance. Light and connection are a key part of our 'How to Create a Happier Home' series.

Light has always been an important factor in well-being, and the purpose of lighting in the home is to help us feel creative, cosy and connected when darkness falls. It can be linked back to our primal need for a safe and secure space to be. It can intensify our emotions, affect our circadian rhythms and alter our moods dramatically.

The Flos story

Flos stands “at the meeting point of art, design and craftsmanship.”

The company was founded in 1962 by Dino and Cassina in Merano, Italy. Originally it was a laboratory for designers and architects in the lighting industry. Within a few years, the brand had moved to Breschia, Lombardy, at the foot of the Alps and a short distance from Lake Garda. In 1972, their products were part of the Italian Exhibition at Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Flos Superloon is a large scale light that is perfect to make a real statement. Its light emission is adjustable in intensity and temperature – from warm to very warm, just like the real moon.
